how to stop automatic updates in Ubuntu and Fedora Core

 how to check correct bandwidth usage and how to stop automatic
updates,no application should connect internet without my permission,
what to do for that?

Steps to stop automatic updates
1. Go to System->Administration->

Synaptic
2. Open Settings->Repositories
3. Go to updates tab
4. Deselect "check for updates" under Automatic updates.
